For My Dad
by Nickolas James
I give you trouble
all year long
I can’t even remember
To mow the lawn
I bug you for money
I ask for more things
I never say thanks
For the gifts that you bring
I know you work hard
To give me this life
You always look tired
When you get home at night
So I take off your shoes
and bring the remote
Get you a soda
and hang up your coat
It makes me feel proud
When you get home from work
But I never tell you
and I feel like a jerk
But this is your day
So I want you to know
That I love you to death
and that you’re my hero
When I need to feel safe
When I need to be hugged
When I need to be told
That I’ll always be loved
I just look for you
and that’s all it takes
I get a safe feeling
From the sight of your face
So in my life
No matter what I do
My only real hope
Is to be just like you
